And I knew Reverend Sorenson was a jerk because he was trying to break up loan and me, but I wasn't thinking about that the day I thought Bud was dead. Lyle came apart at the seams. I had never seen my oldest brother turn to jelly like that before, lie slumped in a chair at the dining room table and put his head on his arms. "Not my buddy," he kept saying over and over. "Not my buddy."
